Hole In Concert: 9:30 Club in Washington DC on June 27th, 2010

Yes, she's back, the one the only - Courtney Love. And she's back under the moniker of Hole instead of the solo artist name. But seriously, Courtney Love was Hole so either way you look at it, it's one in the same.

So the close to sold-out 9:30 Club was an eclectic mix of fans that were getting restless as time went by and Hole had not taken to the stage. The ipod in-between band playlist had started to repeat and still no sign of Ms Love and company. Equipment was checked again on stage and the setlist was swapped out as we waited.

Finally, an hour or so after the posted set time, Courtney Love and her band made it to the stage with Courtney mumbling something about a senator that shouldn't be seen with her and that she was late. For the most part it was very difficult to distinguish what she was saying as she mumbled and slurred her words.

Courtney Love

Anyone that has paid any attention to Courtney over the years knows how she can be and tonight seemed like a bad night for her, or maybe this was a good night for her? Her slurred beginnings continued throughout the night with her at times missing lyrics to drink, cough or just turn the mic to the crowd. Her in between song banter turned into long one person conversations as well as rants that didn't exclude anyone as she berated her bassist as well as fans. There were many in attendance that stood just in awe of her but it made you wonder if they were truely enjoying the performance or just waiting to see what she would do next and being able to say they were there when it did happen.

The set itself included many covers as well as many rare and old demos that have either been heard infrequently or not at all. She even played one song twice! The first time was bad enough but to be subjected to it again? She also covered "Closer" by NIN which just made me cringe.

Unfortunately or maybe it was fortunate, I had to leave prior to the end of the set as it didn't end until after 1am. Makes you wonder if the length of the set and the inclusion of the rare tracks made up for the manner in which they were delivered? Yes we all know how Courtney can be but having seen her before and seeing a cleaner show, this one definitely left me disappointed in her. She's like that little girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead, you know the one.

"When she was good, she was very, very good, And when she was bad she was horrid."
