It was a night of reality show singers with Rockstar Supernova's Ryan Star taking the stage first followed by American Idol's David Cook. Remember Ryan Star? He's the singer that was brought back on the show after eliminated because of fan votes to sing his origianl song and he won the car. So he didn't win the right to be the singer of Supernova but seriously did he need to do that? No offense to Lukas Rossi who did win but Supernova did the one tour and that was it. The show itself was a great way to showcase their talents so all in all they were all winners.
The tour was one of colleges and tonight was Towson University's night. The PAWS lounge was the place and it was packed. Ryan commented that he decided to do a stripped down set being how crowded the stage was that night. The crowd wasn't losing anything with this decision. The set came mainly from his 2005 release Songs from the Eye of an Elephant and fit this perfectly. That album is one that is stripped down to start with and if this had been a full on plugged in performance, I feel much of the feeling would have been lost.

The set kicked off with "Brand New Day" a song that even if you weren't familiar with Ryan Star you might have heard seeing that it is the theme song to the FOX drama "Lie to Me". A highlight for the crowd was when a member of the audience was brought up on stage to play the tambournie during "Famous Yet" and of course the last song of the set "The Back of Your Car". Ryan had performed this song on Supernova; great song plugged in or stripped down. The only thing missing from this set was the current single "Last Train Home" from his not yet released album 11:59.
David Cook was up next and seriously I thought Ryan Star stole the show. Better voice, better stage presence, overall better set. I loved David Cook on the show but a live performance is visual as well as auditory and there was just something missing. Maybe this is just his way of just saying he's still the same person he was prior to winning American Idol but I really felt that he needed to kick things up a notch. Maybe next time.
