Nightwish May 5th, 2009 @ Sonar
by Courtney Campbell
After having to bail on their Baltimore show last Fall due to singer Anette Olzon’s loss of voice, Nightwish was back in Charm City, this time the venue of choice was Sonar. While Baltimore might have lost out last year by the cancellation of the show, they gained this year with the addition of Troy Donockly who worked with the band on their album Dark Passion Play.

The set was a bit different from when the band toured in the United States last. No longer were they starting off with “Bye Bye Beautiful” due to the nature of the song, it was no longer needed. They had their say lyrically and it was time to move on. Unfortunately it’s a great song to kick off a set with and while I understand the band excluding it from the set, I am sorry to see it gone. So instead the night kicked off with “7 Days to the Wolves” and the night proceeded through with a set that was mainly split between songs from Dark Passion Play and Once. There was one song “Dead to the World” from Century Child and “While Your Lips Are Still Red” which was included with the “Amaranth” single as well as the CD/DVD "Made in Hong Kong (And in Various Other Places)" that was released this year. It was a nice treat for the crowd to hear this song live. Having Troy Donockly on tour (Baltimore was his last night) also meant Baltimore got to hear the instrumental track “Last of the Wilds” which gave a nice mix to the night.

What a difference the touring has made for this band. That’s not to say that they didn’t do a great job when they came through the East Coast before but you could definitely tell the interplay between Anette and the others has grown as the band has been touring. It was nice to see the teasing among them on stage.
