If you have ever seen Brand New in concert you know what an intimate intense atmosphere it can be. Many fans describe these shows as "epic". How that would translate into a festival setting was the question that was to be answered this years Voodoo Experience.
Playing in the early afternoon in the blazing sun once the set started it didn't matter that we were in the middle of city park; the band and the audience were one as Brand New went through their set. The set itself was 10 songs, almost half of what the band has been playing at a regular tour date; half of which came from their recently released CD Daisy. The set also had four of the new songs played in a row. Usually a band mixes up their new material with the older as to work them into a set but this set flowed. As a photographer in the pit, I was surrounded by sound as the crowd around me sang along with frontman Jesse Lacey to both the older and new songs. The crowd singing was in harmony with Jesse, not overpowering him but strengthening him.
As a fan of a band it's hard having a festival setting as there is just limited set time and depending on what is played, you might not get to hear your favorites. Regardless, nobody walked away from this stage disappointed, in fact there were many new fans made this day as well.
